Quick Overview

Catholic edition of the NRSV with Anglicised text with a foreword by Henry Wansborough OSB, maps, charts & line drawings. Also includes The Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, Dei Verbum.

Product Description

Based on the latest manuscript discoveries and critical editions the NRSV offers the fruits of the best biblical scholarship in clear, readable contemporary English. It is ideal for use in the liturgy or for private study and meditation.

In 2003, the Roman Catholic Bishops’ Conference asked for work to begin in preparing a new translation of the Lectionary for Mass using the NRSV, and several parishes in England and Wales are already becoming familiar with its use in the liturgy.

The NRSV is a truly ecumenical translation, produced by Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Protestant and Jewish scholars. It has received the endorsement of Protestant churches, the imprimatur of Roman Catholic bishops, and the blessing of leaders of the Orthodox churches. The Catholic Edition includes the complete text of the Bible, with the so-called ‘Apocryphal’ or ‘Deuterocanonical’ books placed in their proper order among the other books of the Old Testament.

Familiarity, Accuracy, Clarity and Inclusiveness.

The NRSV first appeared in 1989 and has received wide acclaim and broad support from academics and church leaders.

The familiar language of the NRSV is rooted in the tradition of the King James Version and the Revised Standard Version, yet it has been completely revised for the twenty-first century. The principles of the NRSV are to be ‘as literal as possible’ in adhering to the ancient texts and only ‘as free as necessary’ to make the meaning clear in graceful, understandable and inclusive language. It draws on newly available sources that increase our understanding of many previously obscure biblical passages. These sources include new-found manuscripts, the Dead Sea Scrolls, other texts, inscriptions, and archaeological finds from the ancient Near East, and new understandings of Greek and Hebrew grammar.
