This book is classic Chesterton. It is not a detailed biography of Francis the Saint, but an excellent analysis of Francis the man. With philosophical and psychological analysis, Chesterton opens up the man behind the saint. However, in order to understand much of the author's writing it is necessary to have read one of the popular biographies of St Francis of Assisi in order to appreciate the details Chesterton omits. Chesterton goes beyond the "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" popular image of Francis to reveal how, in his own words, Francis is "a challenge to the modern world", by taking us back to one of the fundamental teachings of the Gospel - to see Christ in all around us. A beautifully produced book.
