'He followed the truth wherever it led him.'

This description by Cardinal Newman of someone who greatly influenced him in his early life may be applied to Newman himself. At the age of 15 he underwent a conversion experience. From then on he pursued the truth 'wherever it led him'. The Author, delving into a large collection of letters, sermons, articles and books by Newman, portrays him as a passionate seeker of holiness and a champion of truth. In times when indifference can masquerade as tolerance, and steadfast loyalty to a creed can degenerate into religious fanaticism, this book cuts finely through the mists of both apathy and bigotry, and offers to the reader the companionship of an unshakable believer.

Felicity O'Brien has written several books, including works on Katherine Drexel, Mary MacKillop and Margaret Sinclair. For a number of years she worked with the Catholic weekly newspaper, The Universe. She then worked in the Publications Department at the Independent Broadcasting Authority in London. For seventeen years, she was personal secretary to the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Southwark (firstly Archbishop Michael Bowen and then Archbishop Kevin McDonald). In 2008 she gained a PhD from King's College, London, in Theology and Religious Studies, with a thesis on Pope Pius XII. She lives in Kent.
